The inhalation of coolants and oil mist particles while working with CNC lath, milling and grinding machines is extremely hazardous to employees on the workshop floor. When the door is opened on these machines to load new steel parts the oil mist and coolant aerosols escape.
These particles can settle on the floor, on the equipment and all over the workshop. This can make the floor extremely slippery and dangerous to the employees and can also cause damage to the equipment’s electronics.
When inhaled by the employees on the workshop floor these particles can contribute to various health issues. Although oil mist and coolants are dangerous on their own, they can become contaminated with other chemicals, making this even more toxic. Long exposure to oil mist has been linked to various cancers. Other health problems can include:

- Lipoid pneumonia
- Rhinitis
- Bronchitis
- Lung Fibrosis
- Lung cancer
Employees who have inhaled oil mist can suffer symptoms such as shortness of breath, eye and skin irritation, vomiting, fever, rapid heartbeat and a burning sensation in the mouth, throat and stomach.
A suitable solution is to install oil mist filtration systems inside the CNC machines to create a negative pressure, which will assist in solving the expulsion of oil mist particles. When the door is opened, no aerosol will escape and instead will be extracted into the oil mist filter system.
