An industrial centrifugal fan is a critical part of any effective dust or fume extraction system. Its purpose is not simply to move air, but to deliver the required airflow while overcoming the resistance created by ducting, filters, extraction points, dampers and other system components.
Selecting a fan based only on motor power or duct diameter can result in poor capture performance, excessive energy consumption or unnecessary noise. Correct fan selection starts with understanding the complete extraction system.
Start with the required airflow
Airflow is normally expressed in cubic metres per hour (m³/h) or cubic metres per second (m³/s). The required volume depends on the application, number of extraction points and the air velocity needed to capture and transport the contaminant.
A welding fume extraction system, for example, has different airflow requirements from a system transporting heavier industrial dust. Increasing airflow without understanding the process is not necessarily beneficial. Excessive airflow increases pressure losses and energy consumption and may negatively affect the process being extracted.
Static pressure is equally important
Two systems requiring the same airflow can require completely different fans.
Every bend, duct section, extraction hood, filter and other component creates resistance to airflow. This resistance is expressed as pressure, normally in pascals (Pa).
The fan must therefore be selected against a duty point consisting of both the required airflow and system pressure. Fan performance curves show the relationship between these two values and are an essential tool in professional fan selection.
Envirox considers the complete extraction system rather than selecting a fan on airflow alone.
Consider the ducting system
Poor duct design can substantially affect extraction performance. Long duct runs, undersized ducts, sharp bends, unnecessary restrictions and poorly designed junctions increase system resistance.
Dust extraction systems must also maintain suitable transport velocities to prevent material from settling inside the ductwork. This makes the relationship between fan selection and duct design particularly important.
Correct system design can often provide better performance without simply installing a larger fan.
Understand the material being extracted
The contaminant also influences centrifugal fan selection. Fine dust, abrasive particles, welding fumes, hot gases and moisture-laden air can place very different demands on fan construction.
Another important consideration is whether contaminated air passes through the fan or whether the fan is positioned on the clean-air side of a filtration system.
Where combustible dust is present, the complete extraction system requires a suitable explosion-risk assessment. Fan construction, location and associated safety equipment must form part of the overall design rather than being considered separately.
South African conditions matter
Air density changes with altitude and temperature. This is particularly relevant in South Africa, where many industrial facilities are located at higher elevations on the Highveld.
Air density affects fan pressure and power characteristics, so catalogue performance should be correctly evaluated against actual operating conditions rather than assumed to be identical at every installation.
Variable speed control and energy efficiency
A variable speed drive can be useful where extraction demand changes during operation. For a given fan and approximately constant air density, reducing fan speed reduces airflow, while pressure falls approximately with the square of speed and power demand approximately with the cube of speed.
This can provide significant energy savings in suitable applications. However, speed control cannot compensate for incorrect system design or an incorrectly selected fan.
Specialist fan selection from Envirox
A reliable extraction system requires the fan, ducting, filtration equipment and extraction points to operate as one engineered system.
Envirox specialises in industrial air filtration and extraction and has extensive experience evaluating airflow, pressure losses, filtration requirements and operating conditions. By selecting centrifugal fans around the actual system duty point, Envirox helps South African industries achieve effective extraction, reliable operation and energy-efficient performance.
